2.2DISPLAY AT 0 NITS

Blackout mode

The screen goes dark. The recording doesn't.

Blackout clears the status bar, the home indicator and every control, drops the system brightness to its floor, and turns the whole panel into the start and stop control. There is nothing on the display for anyone to read.

DISPLAY OFF

Nothing on the panel

On an OLED display a black pixel is an unlit pixel. Blackout renders a completely blank screen, with no status bar, home indicator or buttons, so the panel emits about as little as iOS will allow. Across a room, or in a bag with the screen facing out, it reads as a phone that is switched off.

That matters in the specific moment where it usually goes wrong. A lit screen is what draws the eye at a checkpoint, in a crowd, or across a table. It identifies the person recording long before anyone gets close enough to see what is being recorded.

Blackout also floors the system brightness while it is active and puts your previous level back the moment you leave blackout or background the app, so you are never handed back a phone you cannot see.

The whole screen is the control

There is no record button to find, because there is nothing to see. Tap anywhere to start, tap anywhere to stop. One haptic pulse confirms the start and two confirm the stop, which means you can run the whole thing with the phone in a pocket or flat on a table with your hand resting on it. Press and hold to reach settings.

Going darker with Reduce White Point

An app cannot toggle Reduce White Point on its own, but the Shortcuts app can. Build a three-action shortcut (Set White Point on, Set Brightness to 0%, Open Anonycord) and put it on your home screen or Action Button. One press dims the display below its normal floor and opens the app ready to record, which is worth setting up in advance rather than in the moment you need it.
